Ouija Board Planchette Sticker

$3.50

I made this Ouija board planchette design as an exploration of the connection between the Spiritualist movement and Gothic architecture.

There are many reasons we have a dark, macabre association with the word Gothic. Part of it is the culture of death that manifested in medieval architecture. Part of it is the devastation of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation on that architecture and across the landscape of Europe. Part of it is the genre of Gothic literature that emerged in the years after.

I see a cultural through-line between the fascination with death and ghosts that flourished in those elements, and the Spiritualist movement, in which Ouija Boards emerged as a method for communing with the dead. While our association with Ouija boards has changed and evolved, it seems firmly planted in the gothic genre.

This design combines the classic planchette shape with architectural designs from the window of a Gothic cathedral, linking a modern association with the word Gothic with some of its earliest roots.
